Issue with Blc. Ben O'Neil "Jubilee

General Discussion

by Glenda Ratliff

Is there any hope of saving this orchid.  It was potted and given to me by membes of an orchid group when I joined the group in October 2024.  It did well until med February.  I noticed a black spot on a leaf, which is still visible.  I could not see any evidence of root growth and pulled it to look at the roots today.  They are all but non-exisistent.  The small bulbs at the base of the leaves has some black leaves and one of the leaves coming from sthe bulb is turning black whete it joins the bulb.  Should I just trash this orchid or can it be saved?

Best guess -- this may have been repotted at the wrong time in the plant's growth cycle. In general you want to repot Cattleyas when new roots are just starting to emerge. Sometimes Cattleyas dump all old roots with repotting. By repotting when new roots are coming, you have new roots ready to take hold. You can root these with patience - there are many youtube videos - search rootless Cattleya.
