Orchids grown in gravel-filled benches which are periodically flooded produce excellent plants but the roots travel and intertwine inextricably; individual containers should be used, such as plastic ice-cream containers with holes punched in the sides an inch or two from the bottom; cattleyas thrive in the pebble mix.
