Terete leaves require sun; broad thin ones need shade; lengthy erect flower spikes appear on terrestrial or rock growers; arching scapes are typical of epiphytes such as oncidiums but 0.splendidum which grows terrestrially usually has a ramrod-like spike; all Mexican laelias arch, while rupiculous laelias from Brazil are erect; thin roots are typical of plants constantly damp, hairy ones appear on terrestrials or in plants in decaying muck on flat tree branches, thick roots such as are found on vandaceous plants need their blotting-paper type of roots to soak up water from infrequent showers.
