Orchid Species: Calanthe izu-insularis

Calanthe izu-insularis is an orchid species identified by (Satomi) Ohwi & Satomi in J.Ohwi in 1965.

ORIGIN: Found in the Izu islands of Japan in lowland temperate forests at elevations of sea level to 500 meters.

DESCRIPTION: Very rare, small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with clustered, small, globose pseudobulbs enveloped by sheaths and carrying 2 to 3, plicate, oblong-elliptic to oblong-obovate, acute, glossy above, gradually narrowing below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms in the spring on an axillary, erect, developing before the leaves are fully mature, minutely pubescent, 12 to 28 [30 to 70 cm] long, laxly 5 to 30 flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate floral bracts carrying wide opening, very fragrant flowers.
