Gabertia ellisii is an orchid species identified by (Lindl.) Gaudich. in B.Stein in 1892. Culture information and photos for this orchid are commonly detailed under the currently accepted name of Grammangis ellisii.
ORIGIN: This is a large, hot to cool growing, epiphytic species from Madagascar found at altitudes of sea-level to 1300 meters in coastal rainforests often overhanging rivers.
DESCRIPTION: This is a large, hot to cool growing, epiphytic species from Madagascar found at altitudes of sea-level to 1300 meters in coastal rainforests often overhanging rivers, that is evergreen but needs a semi-dry winter rest after the bulbs have matured. The large plant has ovoid-tetragonal pseudobulbs enveloped by several sheaths and carrying 3 to 5, oblong, plicate, obliquely rounded apically leaves and flowers in the spring and summer from the half completed new pseudobulb with a basal, arching, to 3' [90 cm] long, bracteate inflorescence with many waxy, long-lasting, fragrant flowers. The mature pseudobulb is unusual in that it has a four sided, tall, spindle shape.
