Masdevallia maculata is an orchid species identified by Klotzsch & H.Karst. in 1847.
ORIGIN: A miniature to small sized, warm to cool growing, epiphytic species from Venezuela, Colombia and Peru at elevations of 1100 to 2000 meters.
DESCRIPTION: A miniature to small sized, warm to cool growing, epiphytic species from Venezuela, Colombia and Peru at elevations of 1100 to 2000 meters with stout, erect ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, thickly coriaceous, elliptical to narrowly elliptical, subacute to obtuse leaf that is narrowly cuneate below into the indistinct petiolate base that blooms in the late spring and summer on a congested, successively several single flowered, 8 [20 cm] long, erect, triquetrous inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul, with thin, imbricating floral bracts and holding the single flower well above the leaf. The unique factors for this species are the sequentially flowering inflorescence, the lateral sepals that are connate with each other for a longer distance than the dorsal sepal and the papillose labellum.
