Orchid Species: Masdevallia xanthina

Masdevallia xanthina is an orchid species identified by Rchb.f. in 1880.
ORIGIN: Found in damp woods in Antioquia and Caldas Colombia, Ecuador and Peru on both sides of the Andes in cloud forests at elevations of 1500 to 2800 meters.
DESCRIPTION: A mini-miniature sized, cool to cold growing epiphytic species with blackish, erect, slender ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose, tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, oblong-ovate, suberect, shortly petiolate, tridenticulate apically leaf that is cuneate below into the slender petiole and blooms in the winter on an erect, slender, terete, 3 [8 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract below the middle and a tubular floral bract that holds the flower above the leaves. Constant moisture, moderate shade and cold to cool temperatures are appreciated by this marvelous species.
