The Honolulu Orchid Society (HOS) maintains a judging system for the judging of orchids. The system was established in June 1951 by a group of internationally renowned orchid growers in Hawaii. The first plant awarded was a Renantanda Jack Warne ‘Sunset’ owned by Kodama Orchid Nursery which received an Award of Merit on June 15, 1951.
Today HOS has a cadre of twenty Honorary, Master, Accredited and Student Judges. Judging of plants is conducted by the Panel of HOS Judges at all HOS general membership meetings, Aiea Orchid Club meetings, and annual shows of the Honolulu Orchid Society, Aiea Orchid Club, and Kunia Orchid Society.
The Panel of Judges is managed and administered by the Awards Committee. The current chairman of the Awards Committee is Melvin Waki. All awarded plants are photographed by an official photographer of the Awards Committee. Award photos can be seen at this web address: https://www.honoluluorchidsociety.org/award-gallery/.
