Catt. walkeriana

Cattleya Alliance

by Angela Baxter

I am trying to find a Catt. walkeriana to mount on either cork or tree branch for my greenhouse.  This site was recommended

by a fellow SlipperTalker.  I prefer a coerulea, but a white would be fine too.

I'm just signed up so have patience with my key board fumbliing.  I primarily grow Phrags. and Phals. in different zones in my gh.

Just to let yo know that I have grown over 30 clones of Cattleya walkeriana. They are not terribly hard to grow. But the alba and coerulea clones are harder then the normal clones in my experience. Mine preferred morning sun, 3-4 hours, a breezy location and 55-85 degrees. They suffer in very warm temperatures. They loved clay pots versus plastic although the best growth that I experienced was seen in plastic net pots. They did just okay mounted.

Thank you Carol. I don't order plants from Hawaii because the shipping cost is expensive and the plants have a rough transition to KY conditions. I have attended Redland and enjoyed it WAY too much and spent far more than I intended. Had a great time though.

Angela, I just posted the vendor list for Redlands and see 4 Brazilian vendors. Miranda Orchids, AWZ, Bella Vista and Orquidario Paulista. Francisco Miranda is out of Haines City Florida so you could give him a call. Both Francisco and Alex from AWZ grow premium plants. I don’t know the others. Carol

Hi Angela, I love the phal you just posted. I would recommend H&R Orchids out of Hawaii but they are cutting back - you might email them & see if they have one. C walkeriana is from Brazil. Oct 7-9 is the Redlands Orchid Festival where vendor’s from all over the world will be there. If you order a plant from them they could mail it when then come to the US. I just spoke with a Paph & Phrag grower, Lehua Orchids in Hawaii. Check out his website. Hope this helps, Carol Holdren
