Phalaenopsis William Kistler?

General Discussion

by Nicholas Filannino

Hi Everyone,

My friend recently found out she was directly related to William Kistler, a late and great floriculturist in the USA/Japan. We are both trying to find an orchid he developed in the 70's called Phalaenopsis 'William Kistler'. Does anybody on this forum have any leads on how to find pure progeny of this lineage.... or any ideas how to replicate the results he had to revive this variety? It would mean alot for her family, and it would be amazing to grow this variety that hits close to home!

Thanks,

Nick F.

Nick, Phal. Buena Flora has 2 awards and there are 2 photos in the AOS data base. Only one is a good photograph, the clone ‘Suzanne’ AM/AOS 86 points award# 19840132.

Hi Nick, I use an orchid data base, Orchid Wiz, to get information. Looking up Phal. William Kistler (Phal. Theresa Hauserman x Phal. Memoria Daisy George) I see the plant was originated by G. Hausermann and registered in 1970 by Elmhurst. Unfortunately there are no awards, because then we might have a photo.. The plant is made up of Phal amabilis 41.8%, Phal rimestadiana 41.5%, Phal aphrodite 15.9%,and then 0.4% of schilleriana & stuartiana. The first 3 species and stuartiana are white with schilleriana being pink and branching. Orchid Wiz has a feature, Cousins, which shows Phal Buena Flora is 42.2% amabilis, 42.2% rimestadiana and 15.6% aphrodite. BTW rimestadiana was considered an amabilis variety until 2007 so the two look very similar. Phal William Kistler would be a large white phal, with branching and possibly a pink blush and/or lemon yellow flushing on side lobes and base. Probably 12 centermeters wide and maroon spots on the lip. So a beautiful large white phalaenopsis. Hope this helps, Carol Holdren
