General Discussion

by Pieter Opperman

I acquired this BLC Hsinying Emperor 'Hsinying' about 4 weeks ago. I chose it because it was about to bloom, and in a few days it did, very nice. Now I notice that the pseudobulb? that carried the bloom is turning black, and there seems to be another previous decayed branch with the same problem.
Is there anything I could and should do here? I am concerned about the rest of the plant going the same way.

This is terrible. if it had any type of black spots when you bought it get your money back from the vendor. I would not attempt to salvage this plant, I just toss it in the trash. DNR - Do Not Resuscitate. Although, I have had a few plants I cut off bulbs as soon as I notice a significant problem. This is why I check my plants daily especially if it gets too hot or too cold as I only grow outside in So Cal and the environment can be harsh sometimes.

Hi Pieter, You should be concerned. If you do nothing the plant will die and it may be too far gone now. I would take it out of the pot and cut off the black, soft rot. It looks like the base of the 3rd pseudobulb is brown at the base. Depending on your location there are chemical sprays you can dip or spray on - ask a local Cattleya grower. But I would clean up and cut off, with a sterilized tool, any black rot. Then you can apply a chemical and let the plant dry before putting it in clean media. Your hope is that the plant will grow roots and a new eye will sprout. A Cattleya can be left sitting out for several weeks in my area - while I wait for roots to start. Also - look under articles for black rot look at the Orchid Doctor. And I would not put the plant close to any other plants. You don’t want to spread the rot through water splashing, tools or your hands. Good luck - you need to move quickly!
