Orchid Species: Houlletia wallisii
(This name is currently accepted by Kew.)
Houlletia wallisii is an orchid species identified by Linden & Rchb.f. in 1869.
ORIGIN: This large sized, warm to cool growing species can be found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in extremely wet montane forests at elevations of 1300 to 2400 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Terrestrial on steep embankments with a short rhizome giving rise to pyriform pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by a few scarious sheaths and carrying a single, apical, thin, plicate, elliptic leaf that has a long, slender, basal petiole and blooms at most any time of the year on a basal, basally pendant to apically erect, to 1 1/4' [37.5 cm] long, few [3 to 5] flowered inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb with very waxy, fragrant [tutti fruiti], non-resupinate flowers.
