Orchid Species: Masdevallia odontopetala

Masdevallia odontopetala is an orchid species identified by Luer in 1978.
ORIGIN: Found as a mini-miniature sized, caespitose, cool to cold growing epiphyte at elevations of 1800 to 2200 meters in Ecuador.
DESCRIPTION: Found as a mini-miniature sized, caespitose, cool to cold growing epiphyte at elevations of 1800 to 2200 meters in Ecuador with erect, stout ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, oblanceolate, tapering to the conduplicate base leaf that blooms in the summer and fall on a papery, sheathed, 8 [20 cm] long, several to many flowered inflorescence arising from the base of the ramicaul with a basal bract and tubular, smomewhat imbricating floral bracts with successive opening flowers held way above the leaf. Several flowers emerge from an apical raceme and are presented one at a time. This species is characterized by having long-pedicellate inflorescence carried by a slender peduncle that is much longer than the leaf. The dorsal sepal is connate into a shallow cup from which the lateral sepals expand. All the apices of the sepal end in long, slender tails and the petals are distinct in the long descending basal process.
