Orchid Species: Masdevallia paivaeana

Masdevallia paivaeana is an orchid species identified by Rchb.f. in 1881.
ORIGIN: This Peruvian and Bolivian, mini-miniature sized, epiphytic or occasional lithophytic, cold growing species is found on rocky slopes in the remnants of the woods left in the region at elevations of 2450 to 2750 meters.
DESCRIPTION: This Peruvian and Bolivian, mini-miniature sized, epiphytic or occasional lithophytic, cold growing species is found on rocky slopes in the remnants of the woods left in the region at elevations of 2450 to 2750 meters with stout ascending or erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly elliptical, obtuse to subacute leaf and has a solitary flowered, slender, 2 1/2 [6.5 cm] long, inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul and with a bract below the middle and a thin tubular floral bract that holds the single, pleasingly fragrant flower at or above the leaves and occurring in the winter.
