Orchid Species: Maxillaria ochroleuca
(This name is currently accepted by Kew.)
Maxillaria ochroleuca is an orchid species identified by Lodd. ex Lindl. in 1824.
ORIGIN: Found in Minas Gerais, Rio De Janeiro and Espirito Santo states in Brazil as well as Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia in lowland to montane forests at elevations of 230 to 1800 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Medium sized, cool growing epiphyte or lithophyte with a short rhizome with thin roots giving rise to a large, oval-ellipsoid, compressed pseudobulbs enveloped basally by several imbricating leaf bearing sheaths and carrying a single, apical, coriaceous, long, linear-ligulate, obtuse and apically bilobed leaf that is attenuate and canoe-shaped basally. This species blooms in the spring on many at once, fasiculate, short, single flowered inflorescence with several oblong bracts and arising from the leaf bearing sheaths enveloping the base of the mature pseudobulb and carrying sweetly scented flowers. This orchid species is often cited as a synonym of M splendens but I keep it separate here until further research has been accomplished.
FLOWER SIZE: 2 inches [5 cm]
