ORIGIN: Found in Cameroon, the Gulf of Guinea Islands, Zaire, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Yemen on rocky hillsides, upland grasslands, coniferous forests, upland rainforests, upland moors and in gullies and in lava screes at elevcations of 2100 to 3800 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Miniature to giant sized, cold growing terrestrial with ellipsoid, wooly tubers giving rise to an erect stem carrying 4 to 7, very unequal, 1 to 2 lowest sheath-like, next 1 to 2, lanceolate-oblong, acute, grading smaller above leaves that blooms in the spring and summer on a terminal, erect, slender, to 6.4 to 22.4 [16 to 56 cm] long, rather lax to dense, to 20 flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, mosly longer than the flowers floral bracts.
