Spilotantha staaliana is an orchid species identified by (Luer & Hirtz) Luer in 2006. Culture information and photos for this orchid are commonly detailed under the currently accepted name of Masdevallia staaliana.
ORIGIN: Has been collected in Ecuador and Peru in wet montane forests at altitudes of 1000 to 3000 meters.
DESCRIPTION: This miniature, caespitose epiphytic and terrestrial, warm to cold growing species has been collected in Ecuador and Peru in wet montane forests at altitudes of 1000 to 3000 meters with a short, inconspicuous ramicaul enveloped by tubular bracts with oblong, oblanceolate, tapered to the channeled base leaf with the apex emarginate with a central apicule that blooms on an erect, 4 3/4 [12 cm] long, racemose inflorescence with 3 distant bracts and 4 to 9 flowers that all open concurrently and are held at or a bit above leaf height, occurring in the fall. The racemose flowers, the erect, hooded dorsal sepal and the erose, petal apices with a sharp, terminal mucronule separate this species from others.
