ORIGIN: Found in Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Mexico, DF, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Puebla, Vera Cruz and Chiapas states of Mexico and Guatemala in crevasses of rocky areas in seasonally dry, pine oak forests at elevations of 1500 to 2700 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Miniature to medium sized, deciduous, warm to cold growing terrestrial with an erect, usually leafless at flowering stem, carrying 2 to 4, basal, arching-extended, ovate-elliptic to suborbicular, acute to obtuse, conduplicate below into the narrowly to widely petiolate leaves, that blooms in the fall on an erect, more or less cylindrical, 1.2 to 5 [3 to 12.5 cm] long, laxly to moderately dense, 13 to 40 flowered inflorescence with as long as the pedicel, subovate when flattened, acute, 3-nerved floral bracts carrying non-resupinate flowers.
