ORIGIN: Found in Zaire, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe in upland grasslands and open bushlands at elevations of 1500 to 2700 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Medium to large sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with ellipsoid to conical-fusiform to fusiform, glabrous tubers giving rise to an erect, sterile stem carrying 2 to 5, upper 1 to 2, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, to lanceolate-elliptical, acute to shortly acuminate leaves and a fertile, erect, terete, leafy throughout, 7 to 11, adpressed to the stem, lanceolate, acute, grading smaller towards the apex leaves that blooms in the fall on a cylindrical, 3.2 to 12.8 [8 to 32 cm] long, very densely many flowered inflorescence with erect, soon reflexed, lanceolate, acute floral bracts.
